History and philosophy
The Consortium for the protection of Latisana DOC wines was established on December 14th, 1976 with its legal address at the Regional centre for the development of wine growing and winemaking techniques – now known as the Casa del Vino – which still hosts the consortium’s headquarters today. The consortium is responsible for the protection of the zone to the south of Udine: it includes the Friuli Riviera municipalities of Varmo, Rivignano, Ronchis, Latisana, Precenicco, Palazzolo dello Stella, Pocenia, Teor and Lignano Sabbiadoro, and parts of Morsano al Tagliamento, Muzzana del Turgnano and Castions di Strada. This is a unique territory with a land that is difficult to work but which offers generous rewards to those who make judicious and attentive choices in the farming techniques used, as it enjoys a particularly favourable microclimate mitigated by the sea breeze. This land has a deep rooted winemaking culture and in Roman times travellers would taste the local wines at the many stopover stations, whereas during the times of the Venetian Doges, the Friulian wine of Tisana earned an excellent reputation throughout the Serenissima Republic.
The first chairman Massimino Zaina, elected in 1976, was succeeded by Massimo Bassani (1978–1984), Zenobio Pevere (1985–1987) and then Gianfranco Bianchini (1988–1991). Since 1992, Massimo Bassani has again been responsible for leading the Consortium for the protection of FRIULI Latisana wines, through the introduction of significant modifications to the regulatory directive for production, participation in national and foreign events and the promotion of innovative techniques in the vineyard and cellar, to promote this small but unique DOC area.
Since antiquity, this area has been known for its wine and its hospitality. The Roman road passing through here brought travellers into contact with the local people, customs and products. State road 14, which today retraces the path of the old Via Annia, offers an opportunity to stop, admire and enjoy the heritage of the Friuli Latisana DOC area, the products of which the chairman and members of this consortium are pleased to offer the consumer. Since 1993, in addition to international varieties, this area has also produced those typical to the region: Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Verduzzo Friulano, Tocai Friulano, Franconia and Malvasia Istriana. Delicious in their own right, these wines also express a spirit of hospitality and of honest hard work, which the visitor can also experience at any one of the area’s numerous agri-tourism farms. While these farms, which offer guests the chance to taste some of the traditional local specialities, are genuinely rustic, they are also extremely comfortable places to spend the night, living up to this area’s reputation as ‘a small compendium of the universe’.
